Passing of Prof. Wojciech Kopczyński

14.04.2022: It is with great sadness that we learned on April 14th, 2022, Wojciech Kopczyński, Professor of the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw, member of the New York Academy of Sciences, co-founder and member of the Polish Society on Relativity, has passed away.

Wojciech Kopczyński

Wojciech Kopczyński graduated from the Faculty of Physics of the University of Warsaw in 1969. In the same year, he joined the Department of Theory of Relativity and Gravitation, with which he remained associated throughout his life. He conducted pioneering studies of spacetime geometry in the presence of matter with non-zero spin. He is the author of the famous discovery stating that according to the Einstein-Cartan theory spin and torsion can smooth out the initial singularity of spacetime. He was a pioneer and an outstanding specialist in the theory of higher-dimensional spacetimes and teleparallel geometries. The perfect lectures of Wojciech Kopczyński educated generations of physicists. Together with Andrzej Trautman, he wrote the book “Spacetime and gravitation” (PWN 1981). We will say goodbye to our outstanding colleague and teacher on May 5th, 13:30 at the North Cemetery in Wólka Węglowa (pre-burial house).
