Prof. Jerzy Andrzej Lukierski passed away

We regret to inform you that on 24 May 2026, Professor Jerzy Andrzej Lukierski passed away. He was a theoretical physicist, a long-standing professor at the University of Wrocław, and a founding member of the Polish Society on Relativity. Only a few days earlier, he had celebrated his 90th birthday.

His scientific work covered, among other topics, the mathematical aspects of the theory of fundamental interactions, symmetries and supersymmetries, field-theoretical models, quantum groups, deformations of relativistic symmetries, as well as noncommutative geometries and quantum gravity.

An important part of his scientific legacy was his work on kappa-deformations of relativistic symmetries, which played a significant role in the development of research on possible structures of spacetime at the Planck scale. Professor Lukierski authored numerous scientific publications and supervised many doctoral students.

For his scientific achievements, he received a number of awards and distinctions, including the Marian Smoluchowski Medal of the Polish Physical Society for his contribution to the description of fundamental interactions and to the development of mathematical physics in Poland.
